ORANGE, ROMAN CITY IN PROVENCE

With its rich history and historical sites, Orange, Roman city in Provence, is a must-visit destination for lovers of culture and history. Orange is a beautiful former Roman city located 18 km from domaine Cadignac.

ROMAN THEATRE OF ORANGE

The famous Roman theatre of Orange is one of the best preserved theatres of antiquity and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built during the reign of Emperor Augustus, the Roman theatre is extremely well preserved. It features an amazing facade: 103 metres long and 37 metres high! A prime location for theatre at the time of the Romans, but still today thanks to its incredible acoustics. Every year, performances are staged in the Roman theatre; several performances are also scheduled for next spring, summer and autumn.

ARC DE TRIOMPHE OF ORANGE

Orange is partly known for its Arc de Triomphe which, like the Roman theatre, dates from the 1st century AD. This monument is one of the most beautiful and interesting surviving examples of an Arc de Triomphe.

HOUSE OF ORANJE-NASSAU

What many people do not know is that from the public park -Colline Saint Eutrope- you have a great view over the historic centre of Orange with its Roman theatre but also on the Rhone River. This park contains the remains of the city’s entire history, especially that of the castle of the Princes of Oranje-Nassau. The city has ties to the House of Orange-Nassau. In 1544, William of Nassau inherited this city from his cousin René of Chalon and became prince of Orange (Orange).

Discover traces of this rich past in the streets and squares of the town. A visit to Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth Cathedral (13th century) with its beautiful murals and stained-glass windows should not be missed.

Every Thursday morning you can taste the typical Provençal atmosphere during the market in Orange as you stroll past the stalls selling crafts and local products.

Welcome to beautiful Saint Victor la Coste (only 12 km away from our domain).

Located in the south of France, this charming village is a true gem in the Occitanie region. With its rich history, breathtaking landscapes and warm hospitality, Saint Victor la Coste is a destination you won’t want to miss.

One of the most striking features is the imposing castle that towers high above the village. Dating back to the 12th century, this medieval fortress offers spectacular views of the surrounding area and is a must-see for history buffs. Stroll through the ancient stone walls and be enchanted by the stories this place has to tell.

WALNUT TREE

a grateful guest: our bountiful walnut tree

There’s a special resident on the property just beyond our terrace: a majestic walnut tree. For years, it’s graced us with its shade and presence. However, it wasn’t always thriving. A towering French oak nearby had slowly begun to cast the walnut tree in its shadow, limiting its access to sunlight and air.

This spring, we decided to give the walnut tree a helping hand. With some careful pruning, we cleared away the excess branches of the oak, allowing more light to reach our walnut friend. We weren’t sure how it would react, but the results have been incredible! This season, the walnut tree is bursting with walnuts – a veritable bounty hanging from its branches. It seems our intervention has been met with great gratitude from this generous tree.

We’re thrilled to see the walnut tree flourishing and look forward to harvesting its delicious nuts. It’s a wonderful reminder of the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of creating a balanced environment for all living things to thrive.

Walnut caramel cake
cake pan with loose bottom of 22 cm diameter

ingredients dough:

300 gr flour
60 gr sugar
230 gr butter salted, chilled and cut into small cubes
3 tbsp ice-cold water or just enough to bring the dough together

ingredients filling:

200 gr granulated sugar
100 gr diced butter
200 ml whipped cream
200 gr walnuts or pecans

preparation:

Preheat the oven to 190˚C. Put the flour in the food processor with the butter and sugar and mix briefly until combined. Add the water and pulse until the grains start to stick together. Lightly dust your countertop with flour and pour out the dough. Roll it into a round piece about 5 cm bigger than your mould. Place the dough in the mould and press the edges well. Line your dough with a piece of baking paper and fill it with baking beans. Put in the fridge for 20 minutes.

After this, bake the filling blind for 15 minutes. Remove the beans and baking paper and bake for another 10 minutes or until the dough starts to turn light brown.

Meanwhile, prepare the filling: put the granulated sugar with 3 tablespoons of water in a pan. Put this on medium heat and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Now turn up the heat and do not stir. Let it boil until the sugar turns a dark caramel colour. Remove from the heat and add the butter. Stir this well until the butter is melted and add the whipping cream. Return to high heat and bring to the boil again. Simmer until it thickens slightly. Add the walnuts last. Pour the filling onto the bottom.

Put the tart in the oven for about 10-15 minutes or until the filling is bubbling vigorously. Remove the cake from the oven and let cool completely before cutting.

Winter Wonderland Awakens: A Snowy Surprise at Domaine Cadignac

Last week, the weather forecasters became prophets of white – snow was imminent, they declared, and reminiscent of the snowfall in 2010. True to their word, gentle flakes began to fall as we settled in for the night. Waking up with a hint of anticipation, we peeked out the window. Had they been overly optimistic about waking up in Winter Wonderland ?

Instead of a daunting blanket of 40 cm, our eyes met a stunning transformation. The familiar landscape was dusted in a soft, powdery snow, creating a magical winter wonderland. The crisp air crackled with a quiet excitement, promising a day unlike any other at Domaine Cadignac.

This unexpected snowfall wasn’t just beautiful, it presented a unique opportunity. Perhaps a peaceful walk through the hushed woods, following pristine trails etched by the first footsteps of the season.
